The new Cispadana Regional Motorway runs for approximately 64 kilometres through the Provinces of Reggio Emilia, Modena and Ferrara linking the north-south axes of the A22 Brenner motorway and the A13 Bologna-Padua motorway; completing the work are over 50km of adduction roads for the motorway system and simplification of local accessibility. The works carried out involve many expedients to insert the infrastructure into the surroundings and landscape: a definitive environmental project for works of mitigation, compensation and landscape harmonization, compiling of an environmental impact study including the way the motorway branch and adduction roads relate to the landscape, impact assessments, a construction site project and a monitoring plan, as well as the design of alternative routes and related works. The integrated multidisciplinary approach used allowed the development of a framework of organic design interventions able to respond efficiently and coherently to the various mitigation, compensation and harmonization needs. In particular, a detailed masterplan was drawn up that summarizes and connects the various design initiatives. These are from heterogeneous spheres but have been gathered in a coordinated way and are characterized by a unifying homogeneous language to guarantee profound harmonization with the land being crossed.
From a naturalistic point of view, 210 hectares were developed for the natural and rural surroundings that include woods and filtering shrubs, hedges and rows of plants, in addition to naturalistic and landscape insertion interventions and the creation of large fully-equipped public green areas (the inter-municipality park of Concordia-San Possidonio). Soundproofing extending for I 25km, and the main buildings were the subject of particular design operations designed to guarantee proper harmonization with the landscape settings being crossed. The leisurely, deliberate exploitation of the land included 65km of cycle paths ̶ 29 newly created, obtained by converting construction site routes and accompanied by a special signage system as part of an integrated communication plan. A further fundamental aspect of the rapport between infrastructure and local amenities concerns the so-called Progetti Obiettivo, particular areas for intervention where parks, green areas of botanical and naturalistic interest, and areas equipped for commerce and the promotion of local produce, allow a fruitful integration between the motorway and the land it crosses.
